Sometimes things have to get worse before they can get better.

We’ve been spending every spare moment for the past few weeks reworking the ground floor of the new Casa del Wildman. Out with the old vinyl and carpet and paint. In with the new.

As we’ve been scraping, peeling, trimming, cutting, and disassembling with the help of family and friends, I’ve also been doing another kind of remodeling…the mental kind. It’s turning out to be a pretty powerful picture of a pretty powerful truth: As God works to make me a new creation in Christ, sometimes things have to get worse before they get better.

I’m a renovation project that takes a lot more than just a fresh coat of paint. I’m a major remodel as my old habits, desires, and interests get pried and scrapped off the interior of my heart and mind to make room for a new way of thinking and living. It’s not fun. But I have faith that the results will be worth it.

Maybe you’re in the midst of a little spiritual remodeling project. Feel like you’re getting gutted and you’re groaning as nails get pulled from the walls of your soul? Hang in there. Our new house isn’t transforming into what we want overnight. The new creation we are becoming in Christ takes time, too. The transformation isn’t instantaneous but it will be spectacular.

Sometimes things have to get worse before they can get better.

Husband. Dad. Pastor. I like to capture moments, pull their threads, and see what unravels. Lead well, read well, think well. And grace. Lots of grace.
